Nick Morris started riding junior speedway (125cc bikes on mini tracks) in Townsville, North Queensland during February 2005, he was ten at the time and had just relocated from Brisbane to Townsville with his Family. With the assistance of Family friend Kevin Anderson Nick began practicing regularly after school, he practiced on vacant land near the site of the old Savanah speedway in Townsville, in readiness for his first official meeting at Pioneer Park a month later. In October 2005 he represented North Queensland in a series of teams meetings, top scoring at the Gold Coast and came fifth in his first Queensland Under 16 Championship at Pioneer Park in November that year. For the next five years Nick continued on the 125cc bike and placed in four consecutive Queensland State Championships, winning the last two. He also placed in the 2008 South Australian Title and was runner up in the Australian Under 16 Championship in 2009, he placed twice in the Australian Under 16 Pairs Championship when partnered with Darcy Ward and Clinton Dennis. In November 2007 family friend Craig Hyde arranged a sponsorship deal which saw Nick receive a jawa 350, 350cc racing is for 14 to 16 year olds in Australia and Nick started practicing prior to his 14th birthday in June. He spent two years combining 125 and 350cc racing, placing in the 2009 and 2010 Australian 350 championships and was a finalist in every State title he competed in on the 350. After his 15th Birthday Nick visited the UK to gain experience on the 500cc machines and UK tracks, riding in second half and amateur events. He did this with the help of Ivor Harm of Brisbane Roof Tiling Supplies his major sponsor who purchased bikes for Nick to ride in the UK.
Nick's performances whilst in the UK cemented him a deal with the Glasgow Tigers who loaned him to Buxton at the start of the 2010 National League season where he quickly began scoring a lot of points. Nick received rider of the meeting award in his very first home meeting and later scored maximums and regularly top scored until he was called up to ride full time for Glasgow shortly after his 16th birthday. A clash of race days between Glasgow and Buxton meant Nick had limited opportunities to ride in home meetings for the Hitmen, however he made a valuable contribution, helping the Derbyshire club to win the National League, National Trophy and KO Cup Final. It was expected that Nick would find the going much tougher in the Premier League however he quickly found his feet and again started piling on the points, his early points haul included a paid fifteen point maximum in a Premier Trophy meeting against arch rivals Edinburgh Monarchs and finishing with impressive scores against Edinburgh and Sheffield at the tail end of 2010.
Footnote
Nick will start the 2011 campaign at reserve for Glasgow, in a new team riding on a revamped race track. A lot will be expected after such an exciting start to his British racing career. He as had a relatively quiet off season at home in Australia, enjoying catching up with family and friends and preparing for 2011. He competed in a few meetings at his local track and also rode his moto x bike whenever possible. Nick will have a full time mechanic in 2011, with former rider Gary Beaton jumping on board, Gary suffered serious back injuries in 2010 and as retired from racing himself, deciding to keep a connection with the sport by assisting Nick.
