Big Event News - Nick included in Rob Woffinden Classic Field

Press Release

One of the biggest success stories to come out of the UK this year has been the revelation of young North Queensland wizz kid Nick Morris. At the tender age of 17 Nick has taken no prisoners in his march up the British league rankings in season 2011. Nick rides for the legendary Glasgow Tigers in the British Premier League and this year has also doubled up at the reserve position with the all powerful Coventry Bee's in the Elite League.

Nick was a high priority target for the SMCWA promotion team and the club were absolutely delighted when Nick confirmed his spot earlier today for the biggest bike show in Perth this summer. I had the pleasure a couple of months back to see Nick ride first hand at Eastbourne in the UK, Nick was really on the gas and gave a gusty display around one of the trickiest tracks in England. It was after that meeting i knew Nick was someone we required to fill one of the international positions for the Woffy Classic said SMCWA Promotions officer Brad Muller...

This young racer won't be intimated by the bigger names and has shown a real liking for the smaller tracks throughout England. A very compact and stylish racer with an absolute bucketful of talent that will thrill the Pinjar terraces. Make no mistake Nick Morris is the real deal and is a name to remember in international speedway for many years to come. Nick's in with a big chance of a podium position at the 2011 Rob Woffinden Classic.

The SMCWA are delighted to have Nick's commitment to the event and we look forward to seeing Nick in action come December 3rd...

A Premier League Champion

After a slightly disappointing couple of weeks, Nick and the Glasgow Tigers finally had the opportunity to celebrate after wrapping up the Premier League Title at Ashfield on Sunday.

Although they won't be officially presented with the trophy until next weekend, they made it mathematically impossible for any of their rivals to reel them in, winning both the meetings in a double header on Sunday, whilst at the same time their nearest rivals Workington lost at Rye House.

It was a very busy weekend starting at Somerset on Friday night, Nick also represented Coventry in a four team tournement at Leicester on Saturday before heading North to Glasgow for the all important double header against Scunthorpe and Somerset.

At Somerset the Tigers were still in the running for a bonus point going into the very last race after a fairly tight meeting. They came away empty handed but the meeting was kept close throughout mainly due to the form of reserve Theo Pjiper and a tactical ride win by Nick.

The 4TT meeting at Leicester saw a Coventry rep side take on the locals as well as a Touring American Team and the World Select. The Bees came out on top with all four of their riders putting in a consistant performance. Nick finished the meeting with two good wins.

So onto Glasgow, and two potentially difficult meetings against in form teams. Despite the nerves there was no stopping the rampant Tigers, who absolutely demolished both Scunthorpe and Somerset. All seven members of the Glasgow team were in fine form, and never looked like dropping points.

Results of the four meetings Nick compted in over the weekend appear below.

CUP FINAL

After Friday's away premier league fixture at Scunthorpe, Glasgow turn their attention to the Premier League Knock Out Cup Final where they take on the Newport Wasps over two legs. The first leg takes place at Newport's purpose built Queensway Meadows Raceway on Saturday night, with the return at Glasgow taking place at 4pm the following day. Despite Glasgow's dominant position in the league, Newport pose a formidable threat, having made several changes to their team in recent months, they are now considered the form team, and look solid throughout. It is also there only opportunity to take silverware in 2011 after a poor start in the league. The Tigers will be hoping to stay within striking distance for the return at Ashfield and Nick will be hoping to keep up the very good form of recent weeks. As a footnote Nick rode at Newport several times in 2010, scoring consistantly well, however both he and Josh Grajczonek were injured when the two teams met in July this year. The wasps enjoying a comprehensive victory against the Tigers.

Grudge Match

Sunday's Premier League fixture at Glasgow became somewhat of a grudge match after the first attempt at staging it was postponed. The Sheffield promotion had been grumbling long and hard about the circumstances surrounding that particular postponement, but it was all to be resolved on track...finally. With Glasgow sitting six points clear at the top of the premier league table and Sheffield second having raced three extra meetings, the pressure was really on the Yorkshire club, and a loss to Rye House on Saturday night didn't help their cause, neither did the absence of one of their star riders "Ricky Ashworth" who was injured during the premier league riders championship the previous day.. Glasgow got off to a good start with maximum points in heat one, but the meeting was really quite close. With tactical rides threatening to keep Sheffield within grasp of at least a point. Nick started off with a win over former Glasgow legend Shane Parker, although Parks got revenge next time out when he went around the poutside of Nick on the opening turns and pulled away. Nick won his last two rides although he was very lucky to escape without injury after a collision with teamate Theo Pjiper during his third ride, when Theo and Nick were in a 5-1 position, leading Josh Auty on the back straight. The race was re run and won by Nick, although Nick and Theo needed medical treatment with Theo coming off worse with a possible hand injury. In his final outing was involved in a good race with Argentinian Emeliano Sanchez, with Emeliano snapping at his back wheel throughout..

Midland Cup

Nick represented Coventry over two consecutive nights when the Bees took on the Birmingham Brummies in the Midland Cup recently. There was very little between the two teams over two legs, but it was two totally different scorelines for Nick. The first meeting was at Birmingham's Perry Barr Stadium on Thursday night, and Nick was on the wrong side of refereeing decisions in two seperate races, one of the decisions being particularly contreversial. Despite the two duds, Nick was always amongst the action, and could have just as easily scored well in the opener.

Thursday 22nd September 2011

Birmingham Brummies : 46

Coventry Bees : 44

The following night at Brandon saw the Bees take the trophy, it also saw Nick make an appearance in the main body of the Bees team and in his very first Elite League nominated race (heat 15). After a consistant performance where he scored valuable points in all his races, Nick's last three races resulted in three heat wins for Coventry, two of them by maximum points. Quite a valuable contribution towards the Bees win.

Battle of the Tigers - Monday 26th September / 5pm

Glasgow Tigers v Sheffield Tigers, Premier League Decider 2011?

Not quite, but next Monday's meeting between the league leaders and their closest challengers will go a long way towards deciding the destiny of this year's title.

Prior to this clash, the Tigers of Sheffield have to face Rye House in an away meeting, and realistically they will need to win that to have any chance of pipping the Glasgow Tigers to the title. A loss at Rye House will make a win at Glasgow vital for Sheffield. If they win both its game on, and real pressure on Glasgow in their remaining fixtures.

Whatever happens, the Monday fixture will be the highlight of the season so far, and a very large crowd is expected on what is a public holiday in Glasgow.

Cup Finalist

After a closely fought cup semi final against the Newcastle Diamonds the Glasgow Tigers have made it through to the final of the Premier League knock out cup where they will meet the Newport Wasps, winners of the other semi final against Workington.

Ten points seperated the sides after the first leg at Glasgow's Ashfield stadium, and the second leg at Newcastle was tight throughout.

In what was a hectic day, Nick put in two solid performances, his 11 and 9 point hauls proving vital. He did however have mechanical problems prior to heat 5, in the first leg, his second race of the day. Having to jump on Joe Screen's machine with just seconds to spare. However he couldn't get to grips with the bike and trailed in last in that particular race, which blotted an otherwise impressive meeting in which he was first to the finishing line three times.

Glasgow 'A Plant' Tigers - (50)

Newcastle 'Sapphire Engineering' Diamonds - (40)

After packing bikes and equiment into the van, both teams had little time to spare in order to get to Newcastle in time for the second leg. The Diamonds got to within four points of the Tigers on aggregate but just couldn't make up the ten points. A Joe Screen / James Greeves 5-1 in heat 13 finally sealing the Tigers passage to the final.

Nick will be a busy boy on Sunday when the Glasgow Tigers take on the Newcastle Diamonds in the Premier League Knock Out Cup Semi Final, with the first leg at Ashfield at 2.30pm followed by the return leg at Newcastle's Brough Park taking place later that night.

The Tigers are pushing for the league and cup double and will be wanting to take a reasonable lead to Newcastle for the second leg. Where an overall victory will see them take their place in the final against the winner of the other semi final - Workington v Newport.

King's Lynn

So with pride at stake but nothing else as far as Elite League standing s were concerned, Nick made his final league appearance of the season at Brandon, against playoff hopefulls the Kings Lynn Stars.

Coventry were without number one Emil Sayfutdinov again, and were unable to use a high scoring guest rider, meaning it was always likely that Nick would have a busy night . The likely scenario was further compounded when both Todd Kurtz and Kenni Larsen were ruled out of the meeting very early on. With Coventry's two reserves filling in where possible.

Nick took his full seven rides in a very tight meeting, and apart from an engine failure in his fourth ride, rode magnificently to be equal top scorer on the night.

Elite League Finale

With Coventry's season dependent on them getting at least a draw in the televised meeting at Eastbourne, the pressue was really on all of the team. Nick was caught up in very heavy traffic on the way to the track and at one stage there was concern that he would not make it in time. However a quick diversion off the gridlocked motorway and into the countryside saw him at the stadium in time for his first ride.

It was another impressive performance which came to an abrupt ending when Nick clipped the air fence whilst making a brave outside move on the Eagles Swedish rider Simon Gustafsson in heat 12, his sixth ride of the night. Prior to that he had recorded heat wins in his second and third rides, and was in the thick of the action in his fourth, where he battled with Cameron Woodward.

Nick took the prized scalp of 2012 grand prix rider Bjarne Pedersen whilst winning his third ride.

Eastbourne won the meeting and dented any lingering hopes Coventry had of making the playoffs.

Nick at Scunthorpe but Glasgow Off

After a fine performance at Ipswich the previous night, Nick was once again guesting, this time for the Scunthorpe Saints who were riding at home against the Redcar Bears. Nick again did well, scoring 9+1, and this could well have been even more had it not been for a broken primary chain when in a good position in his third ride. Nick started off with two second places, prior to the chain mishap, he then finished with a win and paid win. Scunthorpe won the meeting with Nick amongst there top scorers.

Glasgow's scheduled premier league showdown with Somerset on Sunday was postponed early due to very heavy rain in the Glasgow area.

Last chance saloon

The Coventry Bees face the Eastbourne Eagles in a vital Elite League meeting at Arlington tonight (Monday 12th Sept). The Bees need at least a draw in what will be a very tough televised encounter. Nick once again lines up for the Bees, and his performance will be crucial for the Bees who could be at full strength for the first time in many weeks (with RR for the suspended Edward Kennett). If Coventry do manage to take points away from the Eagles they will then have to beat Kings Lynn at home this Thursday. Coventry can overtake the Lakeside Hammers and reach the playoffs with two favourable results, it won't be easy but we wish the Nick and teh Bees all the very best.

If Coventry do fail to make the playoffs, they will finish the season with challenge matches home anda way against local rivals Wolverhampton and Birmingham.

Quiet week? You gotta be kiddin.

The week off didn't materialise due to two guest bookings at the end of the week.

Nick's attractive rolling average has obvioulsy alterted other premier league clubs who are looking for replacement riders and Nick stepped in to replace Richard Lawson for Workington at Ipswich on Thursday, and will also replace Ben Wison for Scunthorppe who are at home to Redcar on Friday.

At Ipswich on Thursday, Nick transferred his Glasgow form to the Comets, and despite being in strange territory he stormed to paid 20 points, dropping just one point to an Ipswich rider when he was beaten by Morten Risager in his very first ride. Nick took six rides, won his third race when taking a tactical ride on double points, and was also involved in two 5-1 wins for the Comets, there only two in what was an easy victory for the Witches.

Good few days!

So overall a very good few days for Nick despite the fall at Eastbourne. He now has a week off, which both body and machinery badly need. Returning to action at Glasgow next Sunday, where the Tigers take on the Somerset Rebels, and then back to Eastbourne for what could potentially be Coventry's final away elite league fixture of 2011.

Nick will also be involved in the Premier League KO Cup semi final meetings against Newcastle Diamonds on the 18th September. With a cup final spot being decided on the day, the Tigers will meet the Diamonds away in the morning and then at home later that same day. The winner of that semi final will then meet the winner of the Newport v Workington semi in the final.

Sunday 4th September 2011

After a late finish at Eastbourne the previous night, Nick made the very long journey back to Glasgow for a premier league meeting against Redcar on Sunday afternoon. This was Nick's first meeting in the main body of the Glasgow side, after spending the season up to date in one of the reserve births. What a start it was with three impressive wins and then a paid win in what turned out to be an emphatic victory for the table topping Tigers. With three riders unbeaten by the opposition and James Greaves also scoring very well it was anyones guess who would represent the Tigers in the nominated heat 15. However it was Nick and Richard Sweetman who got the nod, after they had scored maximum points when riding together in earlier heats. A 5-1 would have given both riders paid maximums, there first for the Tigers in 2011 and it appeared to be likely when they shot to the lead early in the race. However Nick pulled up with machine problems leaving Richard to take the win and join Joe Screen on a maximum. This result saw the Tigers pull 14 points clear at the top of the premier league table with nearest rvals Sheffield having just one meeting in hand.

Saturday 3rd September 2011

The tough return match against the Eagles took place at Arlington on Saturday night. The Eagles v Bees meeting being the second part of a double header which also saw the home side take on Wolverhampton. The Eagles were in top form against Wolves winning the meeting very comfortably, however the Bees provided much sterner opposition. Unlike the previous two nights Nick had to be content with second place in his first ride, he also rode very well to get a second place next time out, after making the start with team mate Chris Harris, both Bomber and Nick were rounded up by the Eagles flying Finn Joonas Kylmakorpi. He gated well again in his third race and was looking good for a paid second behind Bees guest Troy Batchelor until disaster struck on lap three, when his footrest clipped the air fence, sending him out of control. The fall resulted in a badly bent bike and a sore elbow but Nick carried on riding and after finishing last in his next ride went on to an impressive win in a contreversial heat 12, his team mate Ryan Fisher being excluded for an incident involving Cameron Woodward. Nick then finished the night taking a fifth ride where he again beat the high scoring eagles reserve Woodward in heat 14. Coventry needed maximum points in the last race to enable them to collect an important bonus point, but it was the home side that took the points leaving the Bees to make their way home pointless and with a real battle on there hands to make the playoffs.

Coventry v Peterborough - Monday 29th August 2011

On Monday evening Nick appeared in Elite League action for the Coventry Bees, the second meeting between the sides on the day, however Nick only rode in the evening fixture at Brandon. The Bees were missing several riders in both legs and had lost the morning meeting at Peterborough's East of England Showground by 14 points. Nick replaced Josh Auty at reserve for Coventry, the only change from the earlier meeting between two sides still pushing for a play off spot.

Nick started off slowly after missing the start in heat two. Despite trying hard he had to settle for a third behind the two Panthers riders. He trailed in at the back in his second ride before deciding to change bikes, a decision which changed his fortunes and one which also had a big bearing on the overall result. Nick's next two programmed rides resulted in a paid win and a win, both races securing maximum points for the Bees. He then replaced James Holder in heat 14 and again secured a paid win, following his team mate home for a third 5-1 result.

This was a televised meeting, and it turned out to be another good performance in front of the sky cameras.

Glasgow Vs Edinburgh

The return meeting against Edinburgh took place at Glasgow's Ashfield Stadium on Sunday afternoon. With Christian Henry out injured and Theo Pjiper on official FIM grasstrack duty, some thought this meeting would provide the Tigers with more of a test than previous recent encounters with the Monarchs, and to some extent that was the case, despite the Edinburgh side suffering there own losses with two key riders withdrawing from the meeting within six heats. Matty Weathers was out before completing a race and young reserve Kyle Howarth withdrew from the meeting after a fall in his second ride, leaving the remaining Monarchs to battle it out with only one reserve covering for the injured Weathers.

Nick was again extremely impressive, but it was Tully who once again deprived him of maximum points, with a win in heat 12. Nick had won his previous four races in impressive style and was looking good for a full house. However it was another great team performance by the Glasgow Tigers, one which took them even closer to their first League Trophy for 14 years.

Edinburgh v Glasgow - Friday 26th August 2011

The following evening Nick showed no ill effects of his Redcar fall, scorching to an impressive paid 17 score at Edinburgh's Armadale Stadium. Nick had previously shown his liking for the tight Monarch's raceway and continued where he left off a couple of weeks ago by dropping just one point to the opposition. Edinburgh's Andrew Tully being the only home rider to take points from Nick when he won heat 9, after three restarts, at least one of which saw Nick leading prior to the stoppages. It was a great score and victory for the Glasgow Tigers on what was otherwise a poor night of speedway, with track conditions having an effect on racing. Glasgow's Christian Henry being an unfortunate casualty on the night, being taken to hospital with a suspected broken colar bone. Glasgow won the meeting 54 - 39 and pulled 11 points clear of Sheffield at the top of the Premier League.

Prior to the fall Nick had taken paid 8 points from his first three rides, but he was withdrawn from his remaining rides as a precaution with two important fixtures with Edinburgh coming up. In earlier heats Nick had got a paid win behind partner Theo Pjiper in the reserves race, he then had to settle for second place behind the in form Jason Lyons in heat 6 despite pushing the experienced Aussie all the way, before he recorded a win in heat 8, the second 5-1 of the evening with fellow reserve Pjiper.

He also won five of his other rides and came second to team mate Christian Henry in heat 12. What made this performance more noteworthy was the fact that Nick had actually borrowed Richard Sweetman's second bike after his own had died as he went out on track for his first ride. The following evening, Nick switches to the Premier League, where he will be riding just down the road at Leicester, his top of the table Glasgow side take on the Lions in a very important fixture. Up for the Cup

After finally hitting some Premier League form against Plymouth the previous week, Nick followed on with two outstanding displays in the PL Knockout Cup on the weekend. Glasgow were without both Josh Grajczonek and Christian Henry so they were requiring a little extra from the lower order riders and Nick duly obliged.

It wasn't all rosy though, during an engine change after his second ride at Leicester on Saturday, metal shavings were spotted and after a quick phone call to his engine tuner it was decided to put that particular bike to bed for the night. Nick then took the opportunity to use a bike kindly supplied by Theo Pjiper, and apart from the fifth of his seven rides where he completely missed the start he did seem to enjoy riding on borrowed machinery. So much so or rather because there were no other options, Nick again borrowed Theo's bike at Glasgow the following day.

It was more of the same at Ashfield, without the one ride blitch experienced at Leicester, with six very solid rides. Nick was able to help steer the Tigers through to the next round, where they will meet the Berwick Bandits.

Elite & Premier Action

A very busy weekend with Nick once again representing Coventry on Friday night, and after a quick breather on Saturday it was all systems go for Glasgow's first home meeting of 2011 at Ashfield on Sunday afternoon. It was a mixed bag for Nick at Coventry, with two thirds a paid win and a last place, the last coming after Nick overcooked the first turn on lap one of his second ride and was unable to make up the ground required. The paid win came in heat 14 when Nick partnered Kenni Larsen home for a 5-1 result, and in doing so beat Birmingham Brumies top scorer Daniel King in the process. So onto Ashfield and Nick's first hit out on the all new Glasgow circuit. Unfortunately Nick slid off on the very first lap of his very first race at the new track, he had made the gate but was sitting in second spot when he slid off on the third bend. Next time out Nick and his partner Josh Grajczonek were outgunned at the start and trailed off to the Bandits pairing, but they made no mistake in their next race, scorching to a maximum heat win and effectively putting the Tigers team in a match winning position.

Nick's a Star - 14/4/11

The Kings Lynn Stars team manager Rob Lyon made a bold decision to draft Nick into the Stars team to face the Swindon Robins tonight. Despite looking on the pace Nick was finding points hard to come by after three races. However his night turned around dramatically after he switched bikes, finishing the night with two paid wins and an important third, and in the process he partnered team mates to two 5-1's and a 4-2 in three of the last five heats, and played a big part in Kings Lynn winning the meeting. Nick fell in his second ride after his throttle jammed and also had a couple of lively battles with his Glasgow team mate Josh Grajczonek who was riding for the Robins. It will however be his contributions in heats 11, 12 and 14 that this meeting will be remembered for.

Coventry v Peterborough / Hokey Pokey Cup 2nd Leg / 9/4/11

This was the second leg of the aptly named Hokey Pokey Cup, and also Nick's second hit out at Elite League level.

Just like at Peterborough the previous Thursday Nick got off to an encouraging start, this time it was even better, with him claiming a paid win after finishing second to his partner and fellow Aussie Richard Sweetman. Once again the middle of the meeting proved quite difficult although Nick was challenging for third place when he slid off in his second ride. However that was all forgotten when Nick once more followed his partner home in heat 14, Nick actually led much of the race before his partner Kenni Larsen came through, but the 5-1 heat result actually sealed victory for the Bees on the night, although they fell well short of overall victory, it was still a rewarding night for Bees fans..

Elite League Debut - 7/4/11

Nick made his Elite League debut in tonights challenge match titled the Hokey Pokey Cup between the Coventry Bees and Peterborough Panthers. Riding at number 6 Nick's first ride came in heat 2 where he partnered Polish hot shot Przemslaw Pawlicki, the Bees pair were up against the Panthers partnership of Craig Cook and another exciting Polish rider Kacper Gomolski. Gorolski made a fast start and led from start to finish but Nick's first race in the top flight resulted in a very credible second place. Reports from the track suggest that he was very much on the pace throughout the meeting, with a couple of poor starts in his second and third rides possibly hampering his s coring to some degree. Nick was pleased with his performance, and is looking forward to taking part in the second leg at Coventry on Saturday, where Coventry now have a mountain to climb to claw back the points required to take out overall victory

Coventry Press & Practice - 6/4/11

Nick and his mechanic Gary Beaton made the long trip from Glasgow to Coventry for press day today. Meeting many of his teamates for the very first time, and mixing with some of the world's great riders. Apart from the Bees, also present was Australia's former world Champion Jason Crump who took to the track for some practice laps. Jason actually coached Nick on junior speedway a few years ago so it was quite a thrill when Nick lined up alongside him at the startline during one of the sessions. Nick had plenty of track time, which also included sessions with Hans Anderson and Richard Sweetman.

Elite League Start

Prior to leaving Australia Nick had set a short term goal of establishing himself in the Premier League in 2011, and with everything going according to plan he was hopeful of picking up a couple of Elite League outings towards the end of the season.

His dream became a reality much earlier than expected when totally out of the blue he received a phone call from Alan Rossiter the Coventry Bees team manager asking if he would like to be part of the Bees squad this year. Needless to say Nick was delighted and accepted the offer and was quickly measured up for a brand new Bees race suit. Nick will be sharing the number 7 spot in the Bees lineup, doubling up with Sheffield's Josh Auty. At this stage it is unknown how many outings he will get for the Bees, but to be part of the setup at the home of the reigning Elite League Champions and one of the most famous clubs in the United Kingdon is considered a fantastic achievement. Nick has been named in the Bees starting lineup for both legs of The Hokey Pokey Cup against Peterborough, at Brandon on Thursday 7th April and at the East of England Showground on Saturday 9th.

Racing at Last

Its been a long while between drinks, but Nick finally took to the track for racing when the new look Glasgow Tigers took part in the first leg of The Spring Trophy against the Edinburgh Monarch's at Armadale on Friday evening. Nick had been working hard practicing at various venues since arriving in the UK from Australia but there's no substitute for racing, and when he finally took to the track in heat two, his season got off to a tremendous start with a tapes to flag win. His good form continued throughout the meeting with a total score of 8 points. Nick was involved in some good racing, in particular his clashes with Andrew Tully and Craig Cook were worthy of comment from those present. At this stage the date of the return leg at Ashfield is unknown but with only two points seperating the two teams Glasgow must surely be favourites to take the trophy from there near neighbours and bitter rivals.

26/2/11 - Australian Farewell

Nick said his 2011 farewell to Australian Speedway at the Mick Doohan Raceway in Brisbane on Saturday afternoon.. On a very warm sunny day Nick scorched through his four heats unbeaten, making it to the A grade Final as top scorer. Nick chose gate three in the final with local rider Harley Horwood off of gate one, Townsville's Mitchell Davey off two and Ayr's Clinton Dennis off four. Horwood had the edge as the riders entered turn one, forcing Davey slightly wide which had a consertina effect, leaving Nick to do the chasing after a tough first bend. However there was no repeat of his previous wins, as he came home third behind Horwood and Davey in what proved to be a beneficial workout.
